The Frontlog: Shining a Light on Hidden NHS Waiting Lists

Client: MBI Health

By mid-2025, the national conversation on NHS waiting lists had gone stale. The “7 million waiting” figure was repeated so often that both media and policymakers had become numb to it. To cut through this fatigue, we needed to tell a new story.

Working with MBI Health our analysis uncovered ~3 million people on the elective waiting list who had not yet had any clinical contact at all. This previously overlooked group represented the true starting point of the elective recovery problem, waiting unseen and unmeasured. We called this the ‘Frontlog.’

Working with The Guardian newspaper, we launched the concept through an exclusive front-page feature, transforming a data story into a national moment. The piece reframed elective recovery as an upstream problem and made the “frontlog” part of the national vocabulary. Within 48 hours, coverage spread across more than 300 print and online outlets and 95 broadcast pieces, reaching 625 million people. The Press Association syndicated the story, triggering follow-up coverage across BBC Newsnight, ITV News, The Daily Telegraph, The Sun, The Independent, and many, many more.

The launch exceeded all KPIs. Crucially, the story didn’t just dominate headlines - it influenced action. NHS England’s elective recovery leadership invited MBI to discuss findings, and the data has since been cited in policy discussions.

By identifying a new story within a saturated issue, crafting it for impact, and delivering it through the right journalistic partnership, we reignited national attention and established MBI as the authority on elective recovery.
